About this product
In vehicles — both two-wheelers and four-wheelers — a canister usually refers to the EVAP (Evaporative Emission Control) canister, also known as a charcoal canister or carbon canister.
🔹 Purpose
The canister is part of the evaporative emission control system (EVAP system).
Its main job is to capture fuel vapors from the fuel tank and prevent them from escaping into the atmosphere.
This helps reduce air pollution and fuel wastage.
🔹 How It Works
- Fuel evaporation:
Fuel in the tank naturally produces vapors (especially when it’s hot). - Vapor capture:
These vapors are directed into the canister, which is filled with activated charcoal (carbon). The charcoal absorbs and stores the vapors. - Purge process:
When the engine is running, a purge valve opens and allows the stored vapors to be drawn into the engine intake and burned in the combustion process.→ This means no vapor loss and cleaner emissions.
🔹 In Two-Wheelers
- Usually located near
- Difficulty refueling (fuel nozzle shuts off early)
- the fuel tank or under the side cover.
- Common in modern bikes meeting BS6 emission norms.
- Works similarly: traps fuel vapors and sends them to the intake manifold during engine operation.
🔹 Symptoms of a Faulty Canister
- Fuel smell near the vehicle
- Check engine light (CEL) on dashboard
- Poor fuel economy
