1. Purpose

The petrol filter’s main job is to trap contaminants like: 

• • Dust and sand from open fuel tanks or poor storage 

• • Rust flakes from older tanks 

• • Impurities from lower-grade petrol 

• • Small debris from filling stations 

Without it, these particles can clog carburetor jets or fuel injectors, leading to poor performance and even engine damage.  

2. Types Used

• Inline Filters (External) 

• • Transparent or opaque plastic housing with mesh inside 

• • Found in the fuel hose between the tank and the carburetor 

• • Easy to see dirt accumulation 

• • Common in older or non-FI Honda models 

• In-Tank Filters (Internal) 

• • Built into the fuel tap in carburetor bikes 

• • Built into the fuel pump assembly in FI models 

• • Usually, a fine nylon or synthetic mesh screen

3. Materials

• • Nylon Mesh → OEM Honda filters often use fine woven nylon (durable, resistant to petrol chemicals) 

• • Plastic Housing → Lightweight, corrosion-proof 

• • Rubber Seals/O-Rings → Fuel-resistant rubber (e.g., Nitrile or Viton) to prevent leaks

4. Maintenance

• Carburetor bikes: 

• • Clean the filter every 2–3 service intervals if petrol quality is questionable 

• • Replace at ~15,000 km or if visibly dirty/damaged 

• Fuel Injection bikes: 

• • The fuel pump filter can’t usually be cleaned properly 

• • Replace the entire pump or filter cartridge at 30,000–40,000 km, or when fuel delivery drops

5. Signs the Filter Needs Attention

• • Sluggish acceleration 

• • The engine hesitates at high RPMs 

• • Starting trouble despite a healthy spark 

• • Reduced fuel efficiency 

• • Engine cutting off during load
