The master cylinder’s primary job is to convert the mechanical force applied to the brake lever (for the front brake) or the brake pedal (for the rear brake) into hydraulic pressure.

• Mechanical Force $rightarrow$ Hydraulic Pressure: When you squeeze the lever, a piston inside the cylinder bore is pushed forward. 
• Fluid Transfer: This movement compresses the brake fluid (an incompressible hydraulic fluid).
